This is a well done video for beginners and intermediate Zill players.

The instructor appears in several parts of this video and is easy to follow. She breezes through the lessons and it takes a minute to catch up to the rhythm and speed.

Practice makes perfect as they say.

She walks you through how to hold the zills, play them and use them in a choreographed performance.

I am pleased with the product and would recommend it with no hesitation.

  2. Artemis Mourat is an outstanding historian, researcher and incredible fire-cracker of a Turkish dancer. Her recent work, “Zill Speak”, is an essential quality resource for belly dancers of all levels. Her knowledge of music theory, rhythm identification, and the ability to teach zills in such a manner that allows anyone to easily grasp these concepts. I have studied other zill DVD’s/CD’s and they pale in comparison and do not have the quality of expertise and knowledge that Artemis possesses. “Zill Speak” contains an amazing wealth of historical and practical information, a generous gift of knowledge. As a professional dancer and teacher for 16 yrs, I have had students who have dance experience, yet found zills immensely frustrating to learn midstream. If you haven’t learned zills, this is the penultimate source to learn from. This resource will undoubtedly help you incorporate skillful zill playing into your dance repertoire. I learned zills immediately when I started dancing, and I was grateful to learn some more tips and tricks from Artemis. Anything Artemis produces is the gold standard, and contains solid research and filled with generosity and good humour.

    Thank you Artemis!! =)

  3. Artemis has given dancers yet another comprehensive instructional – this installation – Zill Speak. She empowers dancers through education. She covers and goes beyond basics to include: the history of zill playing , complex patterns broken down into simple and unique techniques that allow for easy recall, and the music theory behind the patterns. This CD will leave no questions unanswered. This belongs in the library of every zill player whether beginner or advanced. It’s a must have – an invaluable teaching and reference tool.

It’s also great fun to dance to!

“Zill” Speak is an instructional “Zill” CD for all levels. The booklet is abundant with historical background, diagrams on how to play the Zillls, practical Zill drill exercises, a precise listing of the rhythms by “doom” and “teks” and also includes a unique word pattern voice rhythm created by Artemis as a learning tool to help perplexed Zill students..Teachers and students can easily navigate to precisely the instruction required by the listing of tracks on the back book cover. Tracks are tied to book chapters and include musical theory explanation as applicable to Zills, patterns and rhythms, varied playing methods, Arabic and non-Arabic Rhythms, sound and pattern drills and more.

I’ve taught and danced professionally for about a decade- and yet there is a wealth of new material in here for me as a teacher and as a Zill student. This CD is an outstanding tool for my students to supplement my in-class instruction with practice at home or for my students who jump into my Intermediate classes and never received Zill training from previous teachers. Also, the CD instruction and drills, can generally help bridge the gap in class I have among various degrees of Zill proficiency. If you are a belly dance student beginner interested in the Zills, learning at home on your own independently or enrolled in a class that doesn’t include the Zillls – “Zilll Speak” is an excellent guide to launch into Zills. Arabic, Turkish or Tribal Belly Dance students and teachers will find the CD a valuable reference. I believe it is destined to become a timeless and enduring “CLASSIC” tool in our teaching library. I know it will be a secret weapon in my teaching arsenal. I am looking forward to the next release in the series “Sagat Speak, finger cymbals Egyptian style”
