I just signed up for a belly dancing class at my local YMCA. It starts tomorrow, and they suggested to bring a bright hip scarf. Where can I find one fast and for cheap? Thank you so much!!

    Charity/Thrift shop.

Or find a nice bit of light fabric and cut one. For your first lesson, anything you can tie around your hips will do, sash, or triangular. Best are triangular, preferably with a fringe.

With more than one day, and depending upon the class teacher, and the style of dance, you might want a coin belt. Look on ebay. If it’s too cheap the coins will probably fall off but until you know you like bellydance, cheap is good.

I like JenGen’s advice, especially about just finding a spare piece of lightweight fabric. You don’t need anything fancy for class.

I would recommend, however, holding-off on purchasing a coin belt. Depending on the teacher, she may not even allow these in class. They can be quite distracting and loud.

I think the best thing to do is wait to purchase anything until after you attend the first class: then you can see what the teacher/advanced students are wearing and what is most appropriate for the class.

Besides the many great dance gear websites, you can probably find scarf at local ‘head’ shops or ethnic stores. Even kiosks in the mall sell them sometimes.

Hope that helps and Happy Dancing!
